Cameron Normand | Stepfamily Translator

We assume stepfamilies work like first families, just reorganized. Love the kids like your own. Bond fast. Give it time and everything falls into place. The expectation sounds loving, and it’s everywhere: fairy tales, advice books, family movies. It’s also wrong. Stepfamilies run on different rules, and nobody ever hands them the rulebook. The research exists. Cameron Normand has spent years pulling it out of academic journals and putting it in front of the people who actually need it. Stepfamilies need their own timeline, their own definition of belonging. And when they’re judged by first-family standards instead, stepmothers in particular can pay a high emotional price. Not because they aren’t trying hard enough, but because they were never given the right instructions. Her talk makes the case for retiring a story that’s failing millions of households, and for what becomes possible once families stop being measured by a model that was never built for them. Cameron Normand is a nationally recognized stepfamily expert, and one of the only voices bridging peer-reviewed research and the families and professionals who need it. She founded and leads Stepfamily Solutions, home of the Stepfamily Coach Academy, a certification program for professionals working with stepfamilies. She hosts The Stepmom Diaries, a podcast in the top 1.5 percent globally, and created an annual summit that has reached nearly 10,000 stepmothers. She works directly with leading researchers in the field, co-authoring original research and presenting at academic and clinical conferences in the United States and abroad.

Cameron came to this work by accident. After 23 years as a Capitol Hill attorney and an executive at Time Warner and Sony Pictures, she became a stepmother of four, went looking for answers, and could not find them. She has spent every year since making sure other women can. She holds a JD from Emory University School of Law and is completing a master's in Clinical Mental Health Counseling at William & Mary.
